early goldenrod (Solidago juncea)

Sure it's a little rambunctious (see my earlier rec for common milkweed, below), but it supports a truly wild variety of birds and pollinators. Thin your patch out as needed in the spring to keep it neat. Ours has just started to bloom and it is just so gorgeous. If you're looking for a goldenrod with a mellower habit, try Solidago caesia, which can even tolerate a bit of shade.
